The 13th Cricket World Cup, a quadrennial One Day International cricket tournament contested by men’s national teams and organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC), will take place in 2023. India is expected to host it from October 5 to November 19, 2023.
The tournament will feature 10 teams, and England, who won the previous edition in 2019, are the defending champions. After hosting the tournaments in 1987, 1996, and 2011 jointly with other nations on the Indian subcontinent, this will be the first men’s Cricket World Cup that will be held entirely by India.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had taken steps to blacklist the World Cup after the Leading Body of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would not send its group to the 2023 Asia Cup planned for Pakistan.
On June 15, 2023, the Asian Cricket Chamber reported that the 2023 Asia Cup will be facilitated in a crossover model as proposed by the PCB.
However, before the announcement of the 2023 Asia Cup schedule, former PCB chairman Najam Sethi stated that, subject to approval from the Pakistani government, he would not play any group league matches at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad other than the knockout rounds. Additionally, he desired that Bengaluru, Chennai, or Kolkata host all of their games.
Similar to the previous tournament, there will be ten teams participating. The ICC Cricket World Cup Super League competition in 2020–2023 will serve as the primary qualification route. The main seven sides, in addition to the hosts (India), from the thirteen rivals in the Super Association are equipped for this World Cup.
The remaining five teams and five Associate sides are currently participating in the 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, where two teams will advance to the championship game. This will be the first World Cup without the West Indies because of their defeat to Scotland in the Qualifying Super Six stage.
