Personal Information
Abu Salem is an Indian terrorist and criminal gangster who is also known as Aqil Ahmed Azmi and Abu Samaan.
He is from the Azamgarh district in Uttar Pradesh, which is in the center of India. Abu Salem was a driver for the D-Company, moving contraband and artillery.
After introducing a novel approach in which he hired unemployed youths from his hometown of Azamgarh to travel to Mumbai, carry out shootouts, and then return the following day without being located by the Mumbai police, he eventually rose through the ranks.
In India, he is currently serving a life sentence.
In 1991, he tied the knot with Samira Jumani, a 17-year-old college student with whom he has a son.
Samira currently resides in Duluth, Georgia, in Gwinnett County.
She told interviewers after Salem was arrested in Portugal that he was a violent, psychotic man who forced her to marry him.
Abu Salem and Monica Bedi, his partner, were detained in September 2002 and later sentenced to prison in Portugal for entering the country with forged documents. Bedi was found guilty by an Indian court in 2006 of obtaining a passport under a false name.
The Supreme Court of India upheld her conviction in November 2010, but it reduced her prison term to the time she had already served.
Salem is well-known for usurping overseas distribution rights and extorting money from film producers to terrorize the Bollywood film industry.
It is believed that Salem was the mastermind behind the threats against Gulshan Kumar, Subhash Ghai, Rajiv Rai, and Rakesh Roshan, who are producers of Bollywood films.
In 1997, members of his gang killed Gulshan Kumar, but they were unsuccessful in their attempt to kill Rajiv Rai and Rakesh Roshan.
He also committed several crimes, including extortion and multiple murders.
After that, in 2002, he was extradited to India and arrested in Portugal on suspicion of using a fake passport.
In some cases, he was tried and found guilty, and in 2015, he was given a life sentence.
According to source 1, Abu Salem was born in 1969.1962, as stated in source 2:1968) into a lower-middle-class family in the Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh’s Sarai Mir village.
Although some accounts maintain that he was the eldest of four brothers, he was the second youngest of the four.
His father, who worked as a lawyer, was killed in a car accident.
To provide for his family, he opened a small mechanic shop in his hometown.
After completing his intercollegiate degree, he left the village and attended a primary school in Azamgarh.
He went to work as a taxi driver after relocating to Delhi.
He moved to Bombay in 1985 to make a living.
In 1986, he worked in a garment shop in Andheri West and as a bread delivery boy between Bandra and Andheri.
He went on to become a real estate broker and started his business in 1987 from Arasa Market in Andheri West.
The first case against him was filed at the Andheri police station in 1988 after he assaulted a coworker over a financial matter.
He married Samira Jumani from Jogeshwari in the interim, but he later divorced her.
From her, he has two sons. He reportedly named his sons after Bollywood actors because he enjoyed movies.
His older brother Abu Hatim, who goes by the name Chunchun Miyan as well, owns a shop in his hometown.
He began working for his cousin Akthar, who owned a cheap electronics store near the Andheri railway station in the 1980s.
Additionally, Akhtar worked for Sayyed Topi, a leader of the Dawood Ibrahim gang in the Andheri area.
Later, Abu Salem and J K Ibrahim, a member of the Dawood gang, opened a travel agency in Santa Cruz.
Salem drove for the D-Company from 1989 to 1993, transporting weapons, illegal cash, and goods to various gang members in Bombay.
He was dubbed Abu Samaan due to his ability to deliver goods on time and in the right place.
He supplied film actor Sanjay Dutt with weapons in 1992.
He actively participated in the March 1993 series of bombings in Bombay that injured 700 people, killed over 250 people, and damaged property worth Rs. 270 million.
He left the country in 1993 and moved to Dubai, United Arab Emirates when the police began to gather suspects in the serial bombing case.
Kings of Car Trading was the name of his business establishment in that location.
Numerous D-company sharpshooters were killed in police encounters or by the Chhota Rajan gang in the mid-1990s.
Salem successfully implemented a novel strategy in which he hired Muslim youths without jobs from his hometown of Azamgarh to travel to Mumbai, carry out the shooting, and then return the following day to Azamgarh.
Compared to sharpshooters, these young people were paid a pittance, and the Mumbai police were unable to locate them because they did not have a criminal record with the Bombay police.
Abu Salem rose to prominence within the gang shortly after receiving Anees Ibrahim’s support.
Salem was given the responsibility of managing Dawood’s Bollywood deals and film financing because of his ability to talk quickly.
He invited actors to stage shows he organized.
He was involved in extorting money from the Hindi film industry, funneling illegal funds into film production, forcing stars to give him their dates, and usurping rights from other countries.
Salem began his career under Chhota Shakeel, but the two eventually parted ways and Salem began threatening movie stars with extortion.
reportedly traveled to Pakistan in the middle of 1997 to arrange for Dawood’s brother Humayun’s marriage.
On 12 August 1997, music mogul Gulshan Kumar was murdered without Dawood’s consent.
Salem is thought to be the mastermind behind the crime.
When Rajiv Rai and Rakesh Roshan, two Bollywood film directors, refused to comply with his extortion demands, his gang members also attempted to shoot at them. Salem fled Dubai out of concern for Dawood’s ire.
In 1998, he finally broke off his relationship with Dawood and went his own way.
Salem’s departure from the D-Company is believed to have been caused by his disagreement with Shakeel and Dawood’s preference for Shakeel. He planned to kidnap Milton Plastics’ owner for Rs 30 million in 2000.
His men shot and killed Ajit Diwani, the personal secretary of film actress Manisha Koirala, in January 2001.
Before they could target Aamir Khan, Ashutosh Gowarikar, and Jhamu Sughand, his gang killed four members in Bandra in October 2001.
Lawrence D’souza, a film director, was shot and wounded by two Salem gang members in July 2002.
D’souza escaped. Additionally, he attempted to kill movie stars Manmohan Shetty, Rakesh Roshan, and Rajiv Rai. He was found guilty of the 1993 Bombay serial bombings, the 1996 murder of music magnate Gulshan Kumar, the shooting death of Indian actress Manisha’s secretary, the murder of a property builder, and more than 50 other crimes.
He and Monica Bedi were taken into custody by Interpol on September 20, 2002, in Lisbon, Portugal.
GPS technology was used to monitor his satellite phone.
He reportedly had a relationship with the film actress Monica Bedi.
His extradition to India to stand trial in the 1993 Bombay bombings case was approved by a Portugal court in February 2004.
He was handed over to India in November 2005 by Portuguese authorities with the assurance that the Indian government would not use the death penalty.
The only evidence that Salem was his fingerprint and photographs taken after his 1991 arrest while he was fighting India’s extradition attempt in Lisbon.
Monica Bedi was also extradited to India and found guilty of forging passports in 2006.
She was sentenced to prison, but she was not involved in any of Abu Salem’s businesses. Eight charges were brought against him and his alleged associate Riaz Siddiqui by a special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act court in March 2006 for their involvement in the 1993 Mumbai serial bombing case.
He faces charges of transporting and disseminating weapons.
A lower court in Portugal revoked his extradition to India because Indian authorities had violated deportation rules by bringing new cases against him that carried the death penalty.
The Portuguese Supreme Court of Justice questioned Indian authorities’ legal standing to challenge the cancellation of the extradition order in July 2012.
According to the police, Devendra Jagtap, an accused in the Shahid Azmi murder case, shot Salem on 27 June 2013, inside the Taloja Central Jail in Navi Mumbai’s neighborhood.
As Jagtap fired one round, Salem got hurt in his hand.
On 16 February 2015, Abu Salem was found guilty in the Pradeep Jain murder case.
On 7 March 1995, Jain, a builder from the city, was shot to death outside his Juhu bungalow.
Nameem Khan, a defendant in the case, had become supportive. Another accused in the case, Riyaz Siddiqui, initially agreed, but later changed his mind and is being tried separately.
On 25 February 2015, he received a life sentence in the Pradeep Jain murder case.
On June 16, 2017, a Special CBI court in Mumbai found Abu Salem, Mustafa Dossa, and four others guilty of the 1993 Bombay blasts case.
Salem is currently being held in the Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai. In the Mumbai Blast Case of 1993, the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act Court sentences Abu Salem to life in prison.
Abu Salem, a gangster, and Mustafa Dossa got into a violent fight in 2010, which resulted in Salem having his face slashed with a sharp spoon.
He received a seven-year prison sentence on 7 June 2018, after a Delhi court found him guilty of extorting Delhi businessman Ashok Gupta.
Salem called Gupta in 2002 and asked him to call a number in Dubai. Salem had made threats against Gupta’s family. Sukhwinder Singh Maan, also known as Sukha Delhi Wala, a Punjabi singer, announced in August 2013 that he would include a song written by Abu Salem while he was in Tihar Jail on his next music album.
Numerous other well-known individuals, including Vindu Dara Singh and Rahul Mahajan, will appear on the Music Album.
Gangster Abu Salem is said to be worth Rs. billion.55 billion, or approximately $0.67 billion, and his wife, Samira Jumani, shares his cash and property, which have been valued at at least Rs 10 billion.
Salem claims Rs 2 billion, but his wife has Rs 8 billion in property and cash. It is anticipated that Salem will invest an additional Rs 30 billion in Bollywood and hawala rackets.
The CBI used data from one year of transactions (2000-2001) to arrive at the figures, which are considered to be conservative.
Salem was working as a maintenance manager for a marine engineering company in the United States on a non-immigrant work visa.
Despite his employment history, he could purchase property worth millions of dollars because he operated under multiple names.
The CBI’s preliminary calculations indicate that Salem carried out transactions worth Rs 2 billion in the year 2000 itself. As his whereabouts are unknown, details of his previous transactions were unknown.
According to police sources, his close associates run his legal but Benami businesses in the Middle East.
