Lieutenant General is an Indonesian politician, businessman, and former army lieutenant general who is the currently-appointed Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia.
He has served as a member of parliament, as well as a cabinet minister, and is currently the chairman of the Gerindra Party, which he founded in 2008.
Prabowo was born on 17 October 1951 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and is the son of Sumitro Djojohadikusumo, a wealthy businessman and former Indonesian minister.
He received his military training in the United States and served in the Indonesian military for many years, rising through the ranks to become a general.
Prabowo is perhaps best known for his role in the Indonesian military during the late 1990s when he was accused of human rights abuses during the Indonesian occupation of East Timor.
He was also involved in the kidnapping of pro-democracy activists in 1997, for which he was later dismissed from the military. Despite these controversies, Prabowo has remained a powerful figure in Indonesian politics and has run for president on multiple occasions.
In the 2014 presidential election, Prabowo ran as the Gerindra Party’s candidate and lost to Joko Widodo.
He ran again in the 2019 presidential election and lost to Widodo once more. Despite his losses, Prabowo remains a popular and influential figure in Indonesian politics and is seen as a potential future candidate for the presidency.
