Personal Information
Indian gangster Sathuvachari Varadarajan Mudaliar was also known as Vardhabhai and Vardha.
He was, along with Karim Lala and Haji Mastan, one of Bombay’s most powerful mob bosses from the early 1960s until the 1980s.
His father moved to Tuticorin to work in the shipping industry from Sathuvachari, which is in the North Arcot district of Tamil Nadu.
He was born in Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin. Varadarajan began the tradition of providing food to the needy at the nearby Dargah of Bismillah Shah Baba while working as a porter at VT Station.
He continued the practice as his wealth increased.
During the annual celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi, his extravagant pandals at Matunga Station were well-known and celebrities frequented them.
However, their significance diminished in the middle of the 1980s when Mumbai’s cotton mills failed.
In the middle of the 1980s, at the behest of the police, Varadarajan’s hugely popular Ganapathi pandal received an eviction notice during the time of his waning influence.
He was forced to flee Bombay for Madras during this time, where he lived a retired life until his death in January 1988 from a heart attack.
This was also the time when the majority of his gang members were imprisoned or eliminated.
Following Varda’s wishes, Haji Mastan brought Varda’s body to Mumbai for burial in a plane chartered by Indian Airlines.
His passing was mourned by many.
When his body was flown into the city, Dharavi, Matunga, and Sion Koliwada’s lives were put on hold.
Varadarajan’s beloved companion, Selva, was with him all through his grown-up life, until his passing.
In 2010, Mahalakshmi, a daughter, and her husband, Hemachander, died in a fire at their home in Pattinapakkam, Chennai, from suffocation. Varadarajan was born in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, in 1926.
In 1945, he made his way to Mumbai.
He began his criminal activity by stealing dock cargo while working as a porter at VT Station.
The poor Tamil residents of the Dharavi slums greatly admired Varada, as he was affectionately known.
He expanded his criminal activities into an underworld empire of extortion, kidnapping, contract killing, land encroachment, illegal gambling, liquor dens, manufacturing illicit liquor, and bootlegging by using the massive Dharavi slums as a haven.
The racket of illegal liquor distribution was completely under Varada’s control.
Varadarajan emerged as a formidable rival in the Mumbai underworld in the early 1980s, following Haji Mastan’s cessation of smuggling operations and Karim Lala’s Pathan gang’s weakening as a result of a split between Samad Khan and Dawood Ibrahim.
In his strongholds, Varadarajan ran a parallel judicial system for the Tamil community. Varadarajan Mudaliar was the target of police officer Y.C. Pawar beginning in the 1980s.
The majority of his gang members were killed or sentenced to prison.
Varadarajan was finally forced to flee from Mumbai to Tamil Nadu by the end of 1983 after his illegal liquor and gambling dens were shut down.
The role of Rama Shetty played by actor Sadashiv Amrapurkar in the 1983 film Ardh Satya was loosely based on Varadarajan.
In the 1984 film Mashaal, Amrish Puri played the character Varadarajan of Dogharbhatti.
Nayakan, directed by Mani Ratnam and loosely based on Varadarajan’s life, was released in 1987.
The lead role was played by actor Kamal Hassan. Nayakan was remade in the Hindi film Dayavan, which came out in 1988 and starred Vinod Khanna.
One of the characters in the 1991 Malayalam film Abhimanyu, which was based on the activities of the Mumbai underworld, has a name that is similar to Muthaliar.
Amitabh Bachchan stated in an interview with a television station that he modeled his dialogue and mannerisms for the role of Varadarajan in the movie Agneepath.
Rajkiran took on the role of Varadarajan Vaandaiyar in the 2007 film Thottal Poo Malarum.
Vardhan, played by Ravi Khanvilkar in the 2010 Hindi film Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, was influenced by Varadarajan Mudaliar.
Sathyaraj’s character in the 2013 Tamil film Thalaiva is largely based on Varadarajan’s life.
Vijay was the main character and played Sathyaraj’s son.
A character is primarily derived from Varadarajan’s life in the 2015 Tamil film Yagavarayinum Naa Kaakka, starring Mithun Chakraborty.
In the 2018 Tamil film Kaala, Rajinikanth played the lead role and was influenced by Varadarajan’s life.
